When the patient blows into the peak flow meter, a slider moves according to the strength of the breath. The EPD value can then be read off directly on a built-in scale. This value is compared with the normal theoretical PEF value, which depends on a number of factors. Such as height, age and gender. A low PEF may indicate respiratory problems (such as asthma or COPD), or inappropriate bronchodilator treatment.

It is important to note that PEF measurement alone is not sufficient to diagnose COPD.
