What is the purpose of an external defibrillator (AED)?

An External Automated Defibrillator (AED) is a medical device that helps resuscitate victims of cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock. Accompanied by cardiac massage, the use of a defibrillator significantly increases the victim’s chances of survival.

How does the AED defibrillator work?

From start-up and throughout the intervention, the defibrillator will give voice instructions. To inform the first-aider of the procedure to follow.

First, the AED gives instructions on how to place the electrodes on the victim. Next, the external defibrillator analyzes the heart’s electrical field using electrodes previously placed on the victim’s chest. It determines whether the heart is beating in normal sinus rhythm, or whether it is prone to arrhythmias. Such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.

Following this analysis, the device decides whether or not to deliver an electric shock and, if necessary, gives instructions for cardiac massage.

Some defibrillators, like the Zoll AED plus, work with monobloc electrodes fitted with a central sensor. It indicates to the AED whether the rescuer is performing the correct chest compression. However, almost all defibrillators are equipped only with an audible metronome. To guide the person performing cardiac massage.
