The Peak Flow Spengler is a medical device designed for the prevention and monitoring of asthma in adults and children. It mechanically measures peak expiratory flow (PEF), which corresponds to the instant when the breath is most powerful during exhalation. This state-of-the-art flowmeter is accurate, robust and ambulatory. This makes it an essential tool for asthma patients who need to monitor their respiratory capacity. Indeed, most asthma patients need to measure their PEF at least twice a day.

Here’s how to use the peak flow meter:

1. Return the cursor to zero.
2. Inhale as deeply as possible through your mouth.
3. Place your mouth around the mouthpiece of the device, pressing your lips together to avoid leaks.
4. Exhale as hard and fast as possible.
5. Note the position of the cursor on the scale.
6. Repeat these operations three times to ensure measurement consistency.
7. Keep the highest measurement as the EPD value.

The Peak Flow Spengler also features a color scale alongside its graduated scale. Three zones have been defined:

• Green: controlled asthma
• Orange: uncontrolled asthma
• Red: emergency

This indicative scale enables the user to better situate the results of his measurements in relation to normal PEF values.

When the Peak Flow meter is used by several patients, we recommend the use of single-use cardboard tips to avoid any risk of cross-contamination.
